About Whittlesey
Whittlesey past...
Situated on the western edge of the Fens and close to
the cathedral city of Peterborough, Whittlesey was once
an island surrounded by marshes. Its name is derived from
Witel, a Saxon land owner and EY meaning island, hence
Witel's island. The town centre is an interesting maze
of streets with a variety of well preserved architecture
spanning several centuries. There are examples of timber
framed houses with thatched roofs, occasional stone buildings
and a preponderance of mellow buff local brick.
...and Present
Whittlesey is a thriving market town with attractive
riverside walks and a good variety of shops, leisure
facilities and places to stay. It is also a base for
nationally important manufacturing industries such as
McCains and Hanson Brick. All the facilities and attractions
of nearby Peterborough can be reached in a few minutes
by bus or train.
